Stealing an idea, again
Every once in a while, I’ll run across an episode of The Simpsons I find interesting or amusing because it used an idea I already felt like I had come across before: Homer’s top hat. You know the one. Homer looks in the mirror and proclaims, “I am the greatest and only leader of the free world!” From that point on, the episode goes off the rails. After he’s been told that he’s being officially declared “The Most Famous Man In The World,” Homer begins sifting through all of his many awards, and he discovers a postage stamp honoring his name, rather than the POTUS he assumed it was.
I’ve seen this on TV a number of times before, and so have you. The idea, obviously, was stolen from Citizen Kane. And of course, if you’ve seen that film, you’ll know it was put to good use in a couple of episodes of The Simpsons. In one, the idea of a heart being broken by an election goes through an entire series of ridiculous and funny permutations before one that ends up being more or less successful. In another, it’s a bit of a Halloween episode, as Bart’s costume includes a Boy Scout’s uniform, complete with a pin in his forehead.
I’ve recently been thinking a lot about those two episodes, because the idea of an election that breaks the hearts of everyone involved, and a costume that uses the boy scout’s uniform as a bit of misdirection are both ideas that were stolen from Citizen Kane. I’m not making some sort of accusation here, so much as I’m trying to figure out if it’s coincidence or a clever inside joke or something else entirely.
So, here’s what I’m thinking: The first instance was stolen from the idea at the end of Citizen Kane, in which Welles’ own presidential election campaign was featured as one of the more impressive demonstrations of a hero’s journey. I thought the exact idea came up last year in the other Simpsons, when it was used as a major plot element, and I do it just a couple of days after the fictionalized version was put to good use in that other movie.
And now I think I’m onto something here. Maybe I’m onto

Photoshop's layers allow you to stack layers of images. You can use this to create interesting effects, including creating a flash-like effect by selecting a semi-transparent object, then choosing the image below it, and then the image above it. If you want the background to appear, instead of the layer below it, you can lower the opacity of the layer until it becomes visible.
The Pen tool can be used for sketching, tracing, drawing, and creating shapes. You can draw basic shapes, and then apply effects, such as beveling and resizing. You can then click to place a border on the shape.
The Blur tool allows you to blur an image. You can use it to create soft focus effects, or to make elements appear to be in focus. You can use the blur radius to control the amount of blurring.
The Blend tool allows you to combine two images together. You can blend them together by selecting their layers, and choosing the Blend options.
The Drop Shadow tool allows you to add a shadow to the edges of an object. You can add realistic-looking shadows by selecting the source image. The options will control the strength of the shadow, the shadow color, and the direction of the shadow.
The Eraser tool allows you to erase or erase a selected area. You can pick a circular or rectangular area by either clicking on it or by using the Selection or Lasso tools. You can use the Eraser tool to remove unwanted elements, such as background, or to remove the outline of an object. You can also use it to retouch an image.
The Tone tool allows you to adjust the grayscale of an image. You can adjust the brightness of the image, to bring out certain colors or to lighten up a dark image. You can also raise or lower the image's contrast and sharpen edges.
It's important to remember that most of these tools can be used in conjunction with each other to create very powerful effects.
If you've been using Photoshop for a while, it can be tough to figure out how to do some of these effects. That's why Adobe has made a free online course to help you learn Photoshop. In this course, you'll learn about Photoshop's tools and how they work, including some of the most useful ones.
